We were never in doubt that patents are important for the Danish economy; this is why we work on providing the best available service for all of our clients.
However, the extremely high importance of patents for the Danish economy has now been highlighted by the single sale of a patent license of a Danish owned patent last year.
This single patent transaction increased the gross national product (GNP) by 0.4% from 1.7% to 2.1% in 2017.
The Danish biotech company Forward Pharma entered into an agreement with Biogen in February 2017, which resulted in a cash fee of 1,25 billion USD (9 billion DKK). The license relates to the drug Tecfidera, which is used for the treatment of inflammatory and neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis. Forward Pharma has the opportunity of receiving royalties from Biogen from the sales of Tecfidera; this depends on the outcome of a possible appeal to the recent revocation of the European Patent EP2801355 by the opposition division.
